Siding Installation Your home’s armor — protecting structure and defining curb appeal for decades.
MA siding contractor for new siding installation, siding replacement, and siding repair across all material types. James Hardie fiber cement, vinyl, cedar clapboard, shake, engineered wood. House wrap, flashing, and trim — the complete weather barrier system, not just the boards.
Siding Is Not Decoration — It’s the Building Envelope
Siding does three jobs at once: keeps water out, keeps wind out, and looks good doing it. When siding fails — cracked vinyl, rotted clapboard, blown-off panels — your wall sheathing gets wet. Wet sheathing grows mold. Mold eats framing. A $200 siding repair ignored for 5 years becomes a $15,000 structural repair.
Massachusetts siding takes some of the worst punishment in the country: freeze-thaw cycles 80+ days a year, wind-driven rain, salt air (coastal), UV degradation, ice dam runoff, and woodpecker damage. The right siding material, properly installed with house wrap and flashing behind it, handles all of this for 20-50 years. Wrong material or sloppy installation fails in 5.
At JM All-Pro Services, we install siding as a complete weather barrier system — not just boards nailed to a wall. House wrap, window and door flashing, corner trim, soffit, and fascia all integrated. James Hardie fiber cement, premium vinyl, cedar, and engineered wood. EPA RRP lead-safe certified for pre-1978 siding removal.
Siding Materials We Install
Each siding material has different lifespan, cost, maintenance, and aesthetic characteristics. The most common options for MA homes:
James Hardie Fiber Cement
The premium siding choice for Massachusetts. HardiePlank lap siding or HardieShingle panels. Cement-fiber composite that won’t rot, won’t burn, won’t attract insects, won’t warp. Factory-painted ColorPlus finish with 15-year color warranty. The gold standard for durability in NE weather.
Cedar Clapboard & Shake
Traditional New England wood siding. Eastern white cedar clapboard (horizontal lap) or western red cedar shake shingles. Classic aesthetic that defines MA historic architecture. Requires periodic painting or staining. Natural rot resistance but not maintenance-free.
Vinyl Siding
The most common siding in MA — installed on more homes than any other material. Zero maintenance (never paint), affordable, wide color selection. Insulated vinyl adds R-value. Can crack in extreme cold and fade over decades. Good for budget-conscious whole-house projects.
Stone & Brick Veneer
Thin stone or brick veneer applied over existing siding or sheathing. Dramatic accent material for foundations, chimneys, or feature walls. Not full masonry — lighter, more affordable, installed by siding crew rather than mason.
Stucco / EIFS
Traditional stucco or synthetic EIFS (exterior insulation finish system). Less common in MA but found on some architectural styles. Provides seamless appearance. Requires proper drainage plane behind it in NE climate.
Engineered Wood (LP SmartSide)
Treated wood-strand composite siding that looks like real wood but resists rot, fungal decay, and termites better than natural wood. Paintable. Lighter and easier to install than fiber cement. Growing popularity as cedar alternative.

What MA Weather Does to Siding
Massachusetts siding faces every type of weather assault that exists in the continental US except hurricanes and wildfires. Your siding material and installation quality determine whether it lasts 10 years or 40:
Freeze-Thaw Cycles
80+ cycles per year. Water enters cracks, freezes, expands, cracks wider. Fiber cement and vinyl handle this well. Wood less so.
Wind-Driven Rain
Nor’easters push rain sideways under siding. House wrap and flashing behind siding are the real water barrier — siding is the first line only.
UV Degradation
South and west walls take 12+ hours of direct sun summer. Vinyl fades. Paint chalks. Dark colors fade faster. UV-resistant coatings help.
Ice Dam Runoff
Ice dams send meltwater down walls behind siding. Proper flashing at roofline prevents water intrusion into wall cavity.
High Wind Events
110+ MPH design wind speed. Siding nailing pattern matters. Under-nailed vinyl blows off. Fiber cement nailing per manufacturer spec.
Woodpecker Damage
Woodpeckers peck wood and vinyl siding looking for insects. Fiber cement and engineered wood resist pecking. Cedar is vulnerable.
Our Siding Installation Process
Whole-house siding replacement runs 2-4 weeks depending on size. Partial and repair work faster:
On-Site Assessment
Walk the property. Measure square footage. Identify sheathing condition, existing damage, trim needs. Material and color selection discussion.
Estimate + Material Order
Written scope with material specifications. Material ordered. James Hardie ColorPlus has 3-4 week lead time. Vinyl typically stocked.
Old Siding Removal
Existing siding stripped. EPA RRP lead-safe for pre-1978 homes. Sheathing inspected for rot, mold, structural damage. Repairs made before re-siding.
House Wrap + Flashing
Tyvek or equivalent house wrap installed over sheathing. Window and door flashing tape applied. This is the real water barrier — critical step.
Siding Installation
New siding installed bottom-up per manufacturer nailing specs. Corner trim, J-channel, and starter strips. Proper gapping for expansion.
Trim + Soffit + Fascia
Window and door trim installed. Soffit and fascia replaced if needed. Corner boards. All trim caulked and integrated.
Caulk + Touch-Up + Cleanup
All joints caulked. Touch-up paint where needed. Site cleaned. Old siding hauled away. Final walkthrough.
What Affects Siding Cost
☰ Material Choice
Vinyl cheapest. Engineered wood mid. Cedar and fiber cement premium. Stone veneer accent highest.
☰ House Square Footage
Total siding area is primary cost driver. Two-story homes have more wall area than ranch.
☰ Old Siding Removal
Removing existing siding adds labor. Multiple layers (siding over siding) adds more. Lead-safe RRP for pre-1978.
☰ Sheathing Condition
Good sheathing underneath: simple. Rotted or damaged sheathing: repair or replace before re-siding.
☰ Trim Package
Window/door trim, corner boards, soffit, fascia — all affect total. Aluminum-clad trim most durable.
☰ House Height / Access
Single-story easiest. Two-story standard scaffolding. Three-story or steep lots add significant access cost.
☰ Insulation Add
Adding rigid foam insulation under new siding improves energy performance significantly. Common upgrade.
☰ Architectural Complexity
Simple rectangles cheapest. Dormers, bay windows, multiple gables, intricate trim add cutting and fitting time.

Siding Installation FAQs
How much does siding replacement cost in MA?
Cost varies by material, house size, old siding removal complexity, sheathing condition, and trim scope. Vinyl is the most affordable whole-house option. Fiber cement (James Hardie) is premium but lasts 30-50 years. Cedar is premium for historic homes. Two-story homes cost more than ranch due to wall area and scaffolding. Pre-1978 homes with lead-safe RRP requirements add labor cost. Written estimates after on-site measurement.
How long does siding installation take?
Whole-house siding replacement: 2-4 weeks for average-sized home. Small ranch: 8-10 days. Large colonial: 3-4 weeks. Partial siding (one or two walls): 3-5 days. Repair patches: 1-2 days. Weather delays can extend timelines — siding can be installed in light rain but not heavy wind or freezing rain.
What’s the best siding for Massachusetts?
James Hardie fiber cement is our top recommendation for MA — handles freeze-thaw, won’t rot, won’t burn, won’t attract pests, and the ColorPlus factory finish lasts 15 years before repainting. It’s premium priced but the 30-50 year lifespan makes the per-year cost competitive. For budget projects, insulated vinyl is excellent value. For historic homes, cedar clapboard maintains architectural authenticity.
Can you install siding over existing siding?
Sometimes — vinyl siding can be installed over existing wood clapboard if the old siding is flat and in reasonable condition. However, we generally recommend removing old siding first so we can inspect and repair the sheathing underneath, install proper house wrap, and start with a clean flat surface. Installing over existing means hiding any rot or moisture damage until it’s much worse.
What about the house wrap underneath?
House wrap (Tyvek or equivalent) is the actual water barrier of your wall system — siding is the first defense, house wrap is the last. We install house wrap on every full siding job. It goes over sheathing, under siding, with all seams taped and properly lapped. Window and door flashings integrate into the house wrap system. Without proper house wrap, even perfect siding will eventually leak.
Do I need to replace trim when replacing siding?
Not always, but often yes. Window and door trim, corner boards, soffit, and fascia are usually exposed during siding replacement and often show damage that wasn’t visible before. Replacing trim during siding work costs less than doing it separately later. We assess trim condition during the estimate and recommend replacement where needed.
What about lead paint under old siding?
Pre-1978 homes likely have lead paint on original siding. Removing old siding disturbs lead paint and requires EPA RRP lead-safe practices — containment, HEPA vacuums, proper waste bags, specific cleanup procedures. This is federal law (not optional) and MA has additional requirements under 105 CMR 460.000. We’re EPA RRP certified and include lead-safe practices in pre-1978 project scopes.
Can I add insulation when re-siding?
Yes — re-siding is the perfect time to add exterior rigid foam insulation (typically 1-2″ XPS or polyiso). It goes between house wrap and new siding, dramatically improving wall R-value and eliminating thermal bridging through studs. The cost is relatively small during siding work but would be very expensive as a standalone project. We recommend it for every full re-siding job.
What’s the maintenance on fiber cement?
James Hardie ColorPlus factory-painted fiber cement needs repainting approximately every 15-20 years. Between repaints, it’s essentially zero maintenance — just rinse with garden hose annually to remove dirt and pollen. No rotting, no insect damage, no warping. Compare to cedar clapboard which needs paint or stain every 5-7 years, and vinyl which needs no maintenance but can’t be color-changed.
