Outdoor Home Improvement Everything that makes your yard work better — designed, built, and weatherproofed for MA.
Your complete outdoor home improvement contractor across Massachusetts. Decks, porches, patios, fences, exterior stairs, bulkhead doors, concrete pads — designed for how MA homeowners actually use their backyards, built to handle every New England season.
Your Backyard Is a System — We Build It That Way
Most contractors think of outdoor work as separate jobs: a deck guy, a patio guy, a fence guy. But your backyard is one connected system. The deck transitions to the patio. The patio meets the lawn at an edge. The fence frames the whole space. The shed sits on its own pad. The stairs from the deck need handrails that match the porch. How they all relate matters as much as how well each one is built.
At JM All-Pro Services, we handle every outdoor home improvement service across MA under one license, one contract, and one project manager. Spring-to-fall building season is short here — we coordinate trades, materials, and timelines so your outdoor space is done before the leaves drop.

Decks, Porches & Wood Structures
Structural wood work that creates outdoor living space attached to or near your home. Material choice (pressure-treated, cedar, composite Trex/TimberTech/AZEK) impacts cost and 20-30 year cost-of-ownership:
New Deck Building
Proactive deck construction in wood or composite materials
Repair & Restoration
Existing deck and porch repair before failures get worse
Hardscape & Patio Surfaces
Ground-level surfaces using pavers, concrete, stone, or brick. Hardscape adds usable outdoor living space at lower cost than decking and lasts 30+ years with proper base preparation:
Patio Construction
Multi-material patio installation with proper base prep
Fence, Stairs & Access
Property line definition, security, and exterior access elements. Fences, exterior stairs, and basement access are infrastructure work that affects safety, code compliance, and daily use of your property:
Fence Installation
Privacy, security, pets, pools — six material types
Exterior Stairs & Access
Code-compliant exterior steps and basement access doors
Concrete Bases & Equipment Pads
Small concrete pads for outdoor equipment, sheds, hot tubs, generators, and AC condensers. Reinforced concrete on proper compacted gravel base — built once, lasts decades:
Hot Tub Base
Manufacturer warranty-spec pad for spa delivery
Small Concrete Pads
AC, generator, shed, dumpster, mailbox, equipment
Outdoor Project Spectrum — Small to Comprehensive

Quick Single Service (1-3 days)

Standard Project (1-2 weeks)
Single deck rebuild, patio install, fence around backyard. One main service, full execution.
Multi-Component (3-5 weeks)
Deck + patio + railing matching, or fence + bulkhead + stairs. Coordinated multi-service.
Full Backyard Transform (6-10 weeks)
New deck, patio, fence, stairs, fire pit, pool surround, complete outdoor living redesign.
Typical Outdoor Project Timing in MA
Outdoor work in MA is seasonal. Plan your project for spring through fall — the prime building season here. Smaller projects can squeeze in during winter, but most major outdoor work is April-November:
Seasonal Considerations for MA Outdoor Work
New England weather drives outdoor project scheduling. Plan ahead by season:
March – May
Best season to start planning. Frost out of ground by mid-April. Permits and design can run February-March before construction starts.
June – August
Peak season. Most outdoor work happens now. Schedule fills 4-6 weeks ahead. Book in March-April to lock summer dates.
September – November
Cooler temps better for concrete and staining. Last-call season. Work must finish before hard freeze (typically mid-November).
December – February
Limited outdoor work. Interior basement bulkhead work, planning, and design phase ideal. Some concrete pours with precautions.
MA Outdoor Work Requirements
▸ What MA homeowners should know before any exterior projectOutdoor home improvement work in Massachusetts has specific legal and code requirements. Most projects we handle touch one or more of these (we manage all of them):
MA Construction Supervisor License
Any work over 35 sq ft + permits requires CSL. Ours is #121166.
Home Improvement Contractor
Required for any residential exterior work. Ours is #214808.
Dig-Safe Call (811)
MA M.G.L. c. 82, § 40: required 72+ hours before any digging. Every job.

48″ minimum post and foundation depth. Shallower = winter heave failures.

Decks, additions, structural work need permits. Patios and fences typically don’t.
Town Setback Rules
Each MA town has its own setback bylaws. We verify before design.
Pool Code 521 CMR
4′ barrier, self-closing self-latching gates required around pools.

Outdoor Home Improvement FAQs
Can you do all my outdoor projects under one contract?
Yes — that’s actually how we prefer to work for larger backyards. A coordinated deck + patio + fence + railing matching project looks much better and ends up costing less than three separate contractors not talking to each other. We can also stage projects across seasons if budget makes more sense that way.
When should I start planning my outdoor project for next year?
For spring-summer construction in MA, start planning in January-February. Designs and permits often take 4-8 weeks. Material lead times are 2-6 weeks (longer for composite decking and specialty pavers). To break ground in May, planning should start in February. Summer dates fill by April.
Do I need permits for outdoor work in MA?
Depends on what. Decks attached to the home almost always need permits. Detached decks under 200 sq ft usually don’t. Patios at ground level typically don’t. Fences usually don’t unless over 6′. Major hardscape, additions, and structural work need permits. We verify and file what’s needed.
What’s the difference between a deck and a patio for my yard?
Decks are elevated wood/composite structures attached to the house (typically). Patios are ground-level hard surfaces (pavers, concrete, stone). Decks work where you need elevation (sloped lots, walkout from elevated doors). Patios work where the ground is reasonably level. Many backyards have both — deck off the back door, patio extending into the yard.
How long does outdoor work take?
Quick services (concrete pad, bulkhead swap, small fence section): 1-3 days. Standard projects (single deck, patio, full backyard fence): 1-2 weeks. Multi-component projects (deck + patio + fence): 3-5 weeks. Full backyard transformations: 6-10 weeks. Weather can extend timelines.
Can you handle my pool fence?
Yes. MA pool code (521 CMR) requires specific barrier installations: minimum 4′ height, self-closing self-latching gate, no climbable features in protected zone. We install pool fencing in aluminum, vinyl, and chain link options that meet code.
Do you work with property managers and rental property owners?
Yes. Multi-family and rental properties have specific needs — durable materials, tenant safety, code compliance, multiple unit access. Common projects: multi-family bulkheads, shared fence lines, tenant patio areas, rental deck repairs. We handle these regularly.
What about historic homes and historic district restrictions?
Many MA towns have historic districts with design review requirements. Porches, fences, and visible exterior changes need Historic Commission approval before work begins. We’ve handled historic district work and know how to design appropriate solutions (Victorian-style porch repair, period-appropriate fencing, etc.).
Do you offer warranties on outdoor work?
Material warranties pass through from manufacturers (e.g., Trex 25-year limited, Bilco doors, vinyl fence manufacturers). Workmanship warranty applies to installation quality. Specifics depend on the scope and are included in the written estimate.
