The Walls That Hide Everything Else

Drywall is the most-touched surface in your home. Every nail you hang, every kid bouncing balls inside, every plumbing leak, every minor settling — your drywall takes it all. After 20 years of normal life, even the best-installed sheetrock has accumulated dings, cracks, and water marks that nobody fixes until they renovate.

The thing is, drywall work is incredibly visible when done poorly. A bad tape joint shows under any paint, in any light. A patched hole that isn’t feathered out properly leaves a halo you can see from across the room. Drywall that’s mounted to studs without proper screw spacing pops nails through paint within a year.

At JM All-Pro Services, we handle every kind of drywall work across MA — from a 2-foot hole in a hallway to a whole-house remodel hanging 200 sheets. Three-coat mud finish, sanded smooth, primer-ready. Insurance water damage claims welcomed.

Drywall Finishing Levels Explained

The “Level” terminology refers to industry-standard USG Gypsum Association finishing levels. Each level is a defined quality standard for how drywall is finished. For paint-ready residential work, Level 4 is the standard. Level 5 for critical lighting conditions:

▦ L0

Level 0

No finishing. Just hung. Temporary spaces only.

▦ L1

Level 1

Tape only on joints. Attic spaces, areas behind paneling.

▦ L2

Level 2

One coat of mud on joints. Garages, warehouses, temporary surfaces.

▦ L3

Level 3

Two coats. Heavy texture covers minor flaws. Some commercial spaces.

▦ L4 ★

Level 4 (Standard)

Three coats sanded smooth. Paint-ready for most residential.

▦ L5

Level 5 (Premium)

Skim coat over entire surface. Required for critical lighting or gloss paint.

Common Drywall Problems We Fix

The most-requested repair calls. If you have any of these, we can fix it cleanly:

Doorknob Holes

The classic — door pulled hard, knob punches through. Standard repair, often invisible after paint.

Water Stains on Ceiling

Yellow/brown stains from past leaks. Source verified, drywall replaced or stain-blocked.

Nail Pops

Screws or nails working back through paint. Re-screwed, mudded, sanded, invisible.

Cracked Seams

Tape joints cracking from settling or seasonal movement. Re-taped with proper backing.

Stress Cracks

Cracks above doors, corners of windows. Often need backing, fiberglass tape, refinishing.

Furniture Damage

Holes from moving furniture, kids’ play, accidents. Patched and blended into existing wall.

After Plumbing/Electrical Repair

Walls opened up to fix plumbing or wiring. We close it up and finish smoothly.

Ceiling Sag

Ceiling drywall pulling away from joists. Re-secured with proper screws, finished.

Dented Corners

Outside corners damaged by furniture/vacuums. Corner bead replaced, mudded, sanded.

Mold Damage Section

After mold remediation, replacement drywall installed. Insurance documentation provided.

Our Drywall Process

Standard drywall work follows this sequence. Repairs are 1-2 days; full installations 3-7 days:

DAY 0

On-Site Assessment

Walk the project, measure sheets needed, identify damaged areas, confirm scope. Asbestos test if pre-1980 popcorn.

DAY 0-2

Written Estimate & Materials

Itemized scope. Materials ordered: drywall sheets, screws, joint compound, tape, primer.

DAY 1

Demo / Removal

Damaged drywall removed. Verify studs/joists dry. Prep openings. Plastic protection on furniture.

DAY 1-2

Hang Drywall

Sheets cut and screwed to studs at proper spacing (8″ on ceilings, 12″ on walls). Screws set just below surface.

DAY 2-3

Tape & First Mud Coat

Paper tape embedded in joints. First “tape” coat of joint compound. Inside corners taped with paper, outside with corner bead.

DAY 3-4

Second Mud Coat

After first coat dries, wider “fill” coat applied with 10″ knife. Feathered out from tape line.

DAY 4-5

Third Mud Coat & Sand

Final “finish” coat with 12″ knife, feathered widely. Fully dried, then sanded smooth with pole sander.

DAY 5-7

Prime & Paint-Ready Handoff

Drywall primer applied (PVA or drywall-specific). Surface paint-ready for finish coats by you or painter.

What Affects Drywall Cost

Drywall cost depends on these factors. Square footage and number of corners are biggest:

Total Square Footage

Primary driver. Drywall is priced largely per sheet (4×8 = 32 sq ft) and per labor-foot.

Ceiling Work

Ceiling drywall is more expensive than walls — harder, heavier, requires 5/8″ sheets.

Number of Corners

Inside and outside corners take more time than flat walls. Cathedral ceilings have many.

Finish Level

Level 4 standard. Level 5 (skim-coat) adds significant material and labor.

Sheet Type

Standard cheapest. Fire-rated, moisture-resistant, soundproof cost more.

Demo & Disposal

Removing old drywall, plaster, or popcorn ceiling adds labor and dumpster cost.

Asbestos Testing/Removal

Pre-1980 popcorn ceilings need testing. Asbestos-positive requires licensed abatement.

Texture Matching

Matching existing knockdown or orange peel texture adds labor vs new smooth.

Drywall Installation & Repair FAQs

How much does drywall installation cost in MA?

Cost depends on square footage, ceiling vs wall, finish level, and demolition needs. Drywall is priced largely per sheet plus labor. Repair patches are billed by job (small hole, medium hole, large patch). Whole-room installations priced per sq ft. Asbestos testing/abatement on popcorn ceilings adds significantly. Written estimates after on-site assessment.

How long does drywall work take?

Small repair (1-2 holes): half day. Whole-room repair after water damage: 2-3 days. Full basement drywall: 5-7 days. Whole-house drywall: 10-14 days. Most of the time is waiting between mud coats to dry — each coat needs 12-24 hours. Cannot accelerate drying without compromising finish.

Can you match existing wall texture?

Yes — most common textures (knockdown, orange peel, swirl) can be matched. We apply texture to the patch, let it dry, blend the edges. Color-matched paint over the textured patch makes the repair nearly invisible. Heavy artistic textures (Venetian plaster, faux finishes) are harder to match — sometimes better to skim coat the whole wall.

Do you handle popcorn ceiling removal?

Yes. For pre-1980 homes, we require asbestos testing first (homes built before 1980 may have asbestos in popcorn texture). If asbestos-positive, removal requires licensed abatement specialists. If negative, we wet-scrape the popcorn, skim-coat the ceiling smooth, sand, prime — ready for paint.

What’s “Level 4” vs “Level 5” finish?

Level 4 is the standard residential paint-ready finish — three coats of mud, sanded smooth, primer applied. Works for most rooms. Level 5 adds a skim coat over the entire wall surface — required for areas with critical lighting (raking light from large windows shows imperfections) or where high-gloss paint will be used (gloss highlights every flaw). Level 5 costs significantly more.

Will the patches be invisible?

Properly executed patches blend so well that you have to know they’re there to see them. Three things make patches invisible: (1) proper feathering of mud edges, (2) texture matching, (3) paint that covers the whole wall (not just spot-paint over patch). The patch itself isn’t the problem — the paint blend is. We always recommend painting the full wall after major patches.

How long after drywall before I can paint?

If primer is included in our work, painting can happen as soon as primer dries (24 hours typically). If we deliver paint-ready without primer, customer/painter applies primer first, then paint. Total wait from end of mudding: 48-72 hours before finish paint. Cannot rush — paint over uncured mud causes long-term issues.

Can you work around insurance claims?

Yes. Insurance water damage and fire damage drywall repair is one of our common job types. We document the original damage with photos, provide scope of work matching insurance adjuster’s estimate, work with the insurance company on supplemental claims if more damage is discovered, and provide paperwork for the homeowner’s records. Common with water leaks, ice dams, plumbing failures.

Will dust get all over my house?

Drywall dust is the main downside. We minimize with plastic sheeting at room entrances, HEPA-filtered vacuums, drop cloths over furniture, and dust barriers around the work area. Some fine dust always escapes — we recommend changing HVAC filters after the project. Most homeowners describe our cleanup as “much better than expected” for a drywall job.

How do I get started?

Call (508) 925-0396 or submit the quote form. For small repairs, send photos and we can often quote over phone. For larger installations, we schedule a free on-site assessment, measure, identify any pre-existing issues (asbestos, structural problems), and follow up with a written estimate.
