A Complete Bathroom Transformation in Hubbardston, MA — Tub, Custom Tile, Wood Beams, and a Laundry Room Where There Wasn’t One

Full walkthrough of the finished bathroom.

Some projects are a simple swap. This one was a full reinvention: the homeowner in Hubbardston wanted to turn a dated bathroom into the centerpiece of the house — replace the old shower with a tub and a fully tiled surround, open up the room by removing a mid-room wall, and do something most bathrooms never attempt: bring the washer and dryer up from the basement and build them a proper home behind the shower wall.

What the homeowner asked for

The wish list was specific, and we love specific: a 5-ft tub with a tiled surround and a wide 4-ft niche centered on the back wall for shampoo and soap; two wood accent beams framing the shower; craftsman-style trim inside and around the window; new vinyl flooring; a new exhaust fan and light over the shower; a relocated hot-water baseboard heater; and every piece of wood — beams, window trim, baseboards — stained the same color to match the floor. The homeowner picked Mixed Marble Pebbles tile with Linen grout and, after comparing stain samples against the new floor, we landed together on Early American.

The part nobody plans for: what we found under the floor

Day one of demolition told us this house had a secret. The old vinyl had been installed directly over ceramic tile, and once we opened it up, the tile underneath was damaged and uneven. We could have covered it back up — plenty of crews would. Instead, we sent the homeowner photos the same morning, explained both options in writing, and recommended the harder one: remove the old tile and thinset, level the subfloor properly, and give the new flooring a base that lasts.

“I’d prefer to remove the tile and thinset, that way it is done right.” — the homeowner’s reply, ten minutes later

That’s how we run every surprise: you see the photos, you get the options, nothing happens until you say go.

Building the wet zone right

A tub-and-tile conversion lives or dies behind the wall. New valve and drain, cement backer board, full waterproofing, and then the tile work: a staggered pebble-marble layout planned wall by wall so the cuts stay balanced — no slivers at the ceiling — and the pattern matches on all three walls. The 4-ft niche was framed, waterproofed, and finished with stone so it reads like part of the design, not an afterthought.

A laundry room out of thin air

Moving a washer and dryer from a basement to a first-floor bathroom means building everything they need from scratch: new water supplies, a drain and standpipe, a dryer vent run to the exterior, and dedicated electrical. We tucked the pair on the left side of the rear area, partially hidden by the shower wall — exactly where the homeowner wanted them — so the machines live upstairs without dominating the room.

The details that make the room

The two accent beams beside the shower and the ceiling beam were built with mitered edges so each corner shows one clean seam. The window got trim on the wall and on the inside edges of the opening, craftsman-style with an extended head piece. Beams, window trim, and baseboards all took the same Early American stain, tying the whole room to the floor. We finished with a new centered vanity light, a raised mirror set exactly where the homeowner marked it, two added outlets, and a fresh white ceiling.

How we handle the unexpected (because there’s always an unexpected)

Remodels of older homes hide things: damaged subfloors, wiring that isn’t where it should be, heating pipes in the path of the new plan. Our promise on this project was the same one we make on every project. Every material receipt goes to the homeowner at actual cost — no markup, every receipt provided. Changes get discussed in writing before they cost anything. And the small extras that popped up along the way — added outlets, the additional floor leveling work — we took care of as part of doing the job right. When the project wrapped, we even returned the unused materials and sent the homeowner a refund check for the difference.

That’s what a workmanship warranty means to us: we’re accountable for the work, and we make it easy to see exactly what you paid for.

The result

A dated bathroom became a bright, custom space with a tub worth soaking in, tile work worth photographing, first-floor laundry, and woodwork that looks like it was always meant to be there — backed by our one-year workmanship warranty.
