Windows Do More Work Than You Think
Most homeowners don’t think about windows until one fails. But windows are doing seven jobs at once — letting light in, keeping rain out, blocking wind, insulating against heat and cold, providing fire egress, opening for ventilation, and looking good doing all of it. When windows fail, multiple problems show up at the same time: drafts, condensation, fogged glass, hard-to-open sashes, daylight visible at the edges.
Old single-pane windows in pre-1980 MA homes are responsible for up to 30% of total heating costs. Replacing 12 of them with Energy Star double or triple-pane windows usually pays back through reduced heating bills in 7-10 years — and the comfort improvement is immediate.
At JM All-Pro Services, we install replacement windows (inserted into existing frames) and new construction windows (full frame replacement with new flashing and trim). Andersen, Marvin, Pella, Harvey products. Mass Save energy efficiency program rebates available for qualifying installations.
Window Styles We Install
Different rooms call for different window styles. The most common styles in MA homes:
Double Hung
Both sashes slide vertically. Both tilt in for cleaning. Classic New England look. Standard residential choice.
Single Hung
Only bottom sash slides. Top fixed. Lower cost than double hung. Common in builder-grade homes.
Casement
Hinged on one side, cranks outward. Full window opens for maximum ventilation. Tightest seal when closed.
Awning
Hinged at top, opens outward at bottom. Allows ventilation during rain. Common in bathrooms and basements.
Slider
Horizontal sliding sashes. Wider than tall. Good for spaces where vertical clearance is limited. Patio replacement.
Picture / Fixed
Non-opening fixed window. Maximum glass area, lowest cost per sq ft. Used for views or paired with operable windows.
Bay & Bow
Project outward from house wall, creating window seat or display area. Bay has 3 panels, bow has 4-5 curved panels.
Egress Window
Code-required emergency escape window for basement bedrooms or any sleeping room. Specific MA R310 size minimums apply.
Frame Materials — Which One for MA?
Frame material affects price, durability, insulation value, and maintenance. Each material has tradeoffs — the right choice depends on your home and budget:
Vinyl
Most affordable. No painting needed. Good insulation. Limited color options. Most common replacement choice.
Fiberglass
Stronger than vinyl, paintable, more durable in MA extremes. Mid-high cost. Pella Impervia, Marvin Essential.
Wood (Painted)
Classic look, premium feel. Requires periodic repainting. Andersen 400 Series, Marvin Elevate. Higher cost.
Wood/Aluminum Clad
Wood interior, weather-resistant aluminum exterior. Best of both worlds. Andersen A-Series, Marvin Signature.
Wood/Fiberglass Clad
Wood interior, fiberglass exterior. Premium tier, very long-lasting. Marvin Ultimate, Pella Architect Series.
Mass Save Energy Efficiency Program
Massachusetts homeowners can qualify for Mass Save rebates on Energy Star certified window installations. The program is funded through utility surcharges (which you pay anyway) and provides direct rebates for qualifying energy upgrades. Approximate energy impact from replacing single-pane windows:
Replacement vs New Construction Windows
Two distinct installation approaches. The right one depends on your existing window frame condition and what you want to achieve:
Replacement (Insert)
EXISTING FRAME OKNew window installed into existing frame. Trim and siding stay in place. Faster install. Lower cost. Existing frame must be in good condition.
- 1-2 days for whole house
- No trim/siding disturbed
- Lower labor cost
- Glass area slightly smaller
- Existing frame must be sound
New Construction (Full)
FRAME REPLACEDEntire window assembly replaced including frame, flashing, and surrounding trim. More labor-intensive. Full weatherproofing. Required when existing frame is rotted.
- 3-5 days for whole house
- New flashing + weatherproofing
- Full glass area
- Trim/siding rework needed
- Solves rotted frame issues

What Affects Window Installation Cost
Window cost varies widely based on these factors. Window count and brand are biggest:
Number of Windows
Primary cost driver. Each window is its own material cost plus install labor.
Brand & Quality Tier
Builder-grade vinyl cheapest. Andersen 400/Marvin Elevate mid-premium. Andersen A-Series/Marvin Signature top.
Frame Material
Vinyl cheapest. Fiberglass mid. Wood premium. Aluminum-clad wood top tier.
Window Style
Single hung cheapest. Double hung standard. Casement mid. Bay/bow custom premium.
Glass Package
Double-pane standard. Triple-pane premium. Argon fill standard. Krypton fill premium.
Replacement vs New Construction
Replacement (insert) lower cost. New construction (full frame) higher labor but solves frame issues.

Window Installation FAQs
How much does window installation cost in MA?
Cost varies widely based on window count, brand, frame material, glass package, and replacement vs new construction approach. Builder-grade vinyl windows are the most affordable. Premium Andersen A-Series, Marvin Signature, and Pella Architect Series are top tier. Mass Save rebates can reduce net cost on qualifying Energy Star installations. Written estimates after on-site measure visit.
How long does window installation take?
Single window replacement: 1-2 hours. Small project (4-6 windows): 1 day. Average home (12-18 windows): 2-3 days. Full house with new construction approach: 3-5 days. The 4-8 week wait is in window manufacturing — once windows arrive, install is quick.
What’s the difference between replacement and new construction windows?
Replacement (insert) windows install into existing frame — trim and siding stay in place. Faster, cheaper, but glass area is slightly smaller. Requires existing frame in good condition. New construction (full frame) replaces the entire window including frame and flashing. More labor and trim work, but solves rotted frame issues and provides full glass area. We assess your existing frames and recommend the right approach per window.
What brands do you install?
Andersen (400 Series, A-Series), Marvin (Elevate, Signature, Ultimate), Pella (Lifestyle, Impervia, Architect Series), Harvey (Tribute, Classic), and others. Each brand has tiers from mid-range to premium. We can install any major brand — recommend based on your home, budget, and aesthetic preferences during the estimate visit.
Are the windows Energy Star certified?
Energy Star Northern Climate Zone certified windows are standard for MA installations. This certification requires U-factor ≤0.30 (lower = better insulation), specific SHGC ratings, and verified NFRC ratings. These windows qualify for Mass Save rebates and federal energy efficiency tax credits when available.
How do Mass Save rebates work?
Mass Save is Massachusetts’ utility-funded energy efficiency program. Qualifying Energy Star window installations may qualify for rebates of $50-$200+ per window depending on current program offerings (program details change year to year). We handle the rebate paperwork as part of the installation. Rebate is paid by check after installation completion and submission. The rebate is on top of your reduced heating bills going forward.
Do I need egress windows for my basement bedroom?
Yes — MA building code R310 requires emergency escape and rescue openings in every basement bedroom and any sleeping room. Minimum dimensions: 5.7 sq ft opening area, 24″ minimum height, 20″ minimum width, and 44″ max sill height from floor. If converting basement to bedroom, egress is non-negotiable. We size egress windows correctly and coordinate any necessary wall framing changes.
What about lead paint around old windows?
Window replacement on pre-1978 homes requires EPA RRP lead-safe practices because window trim disturbance creates lead paint dust. We follow proper containment (plastic sheeting, HEPA vacuums), use lead-safe scraping practices, and dispose of debris correctly. Required by federal law. Also required by MA 105 CMR 460.000 lead-safe renovation rules.
Can I keep my existing trim?
For replacement (insert) installations, yes — interior and exterior trim stays in place. For new construction (full frame) installations, trim is removed and reinstalled or replaced. If your trim is in good condition with the right profile, we can usually save and reinstall it. If trim is damaged or you want updated trim styles, replacement is recommended.
